Pushing plastic forks into garden soil may seem strange at first, yet the practice has a practical purpose. Some people place them between plants with their prongs facing upwards, forming a physical barrier that makes it harder for dogs, cats and other animals to walk through or dig in particular parts of a flowerbed.

The aim is to use an everyday item to make certain areas of soil harder to reach. Positioned among the plants, the forks fill spaces where an animal might otherwise step, lie down or start digging.

This approach does not rely on smells or any product applied to the soil. Its main purpose is to form a physical obstruction, particularly in small beds where animals often disturb freshly turned earth.

The exposed prongs change the available surface between the plants. Rather than finding a clear patch in which to dig or settle, the animal encounters several obstacles placed close together.
