Ongoing humidity gradually softens plastic. Splashes can leave behind urea and uric salts, which attach themselves to limescale. In hard-water areas, calcium and magnesium leave an additional film. Many toilet lids are made from polypropylene or urea-formaldehyde resins. Although these materials cope well with knocks, they can oxidise. Regular contact with strong bleach or ammonia accelerates this process and can make yellowing worse. Mild cleaning chemistry is more effective than aggressive scrubbing.

  • Put 2 tablespoons of baking soda in a small bowl, then add 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. Mix them into a foamy paste.
  • Apply a light coating to every yellowed section. Use a silicone spatula or soft sponge to work around hinges and edges.
  • Leave it for 10 minutes, allowing the fizzing action to work within the surface pores.
  • Gently clean with a soft-bristled brush or non-scratch sponge. Lift away the residue instead of rubbing it deeper into the material.

Do not combine peroxide and vinegar in the same container. That pairing can form peracetic acid, which irritates skin and lungs.

Bleach as a last resort, used with care

A few stains may remain after gentler approaches. In that case, diluted bleach can be used sparingly. Add 1/2 cup (about 120 ml) of standard household bleach to 4.5 litres of warm water. Consider the material of your toilet seat. Polypropylene is resistant to chipping and easy to clean. Wood-core seats feel warmer, but moisture can enter around the edges when their coating fails. Urea-formaldehyde has a glossy, hard finish, though harsh chemicals may cause it to craze. When replacing a seat, select a smooth, closed-front design with quick-release hinges. This type of fitting allows the seat to be removed for a five-minute deep clean around the mounting posts.

Hard water is another factor. White crust on taps indicates that a small cleaner placed in the cistern will not resolve staining. A whole-house water softener or a compact cartridge fitted to the bathroom water supply can reduce limescale and shorten cleaning time. Citric acid can also be used occasionally to descale hinges and bolts, provided it is rinsed away thoroughly afterwards.

In cost terms, a month of whitening with baking soda and vinegar costs only pennies. Hydrogen peroxide is slightly more expensive, although one bottle lasts for numerous cleaning cycles. Gloves protect your hands and make longer scrubbing more comfortable. A soft-bristled toothbrush is useful for cleaning hinge bases and screw covers, where odours often remain.

For a shared bathroom, create a simple rota. One person can handle a five-minute wipe-down each weekend. Keep a labelled spray bottle containing the mild solution under the sink, with a clean cloth beside it. Reducing the effort involved makes it more likely that the task will be completed regularly.

If fragrances bother you, choose unperfumed products. The smell of vinegar disappears as it dries. For a fresher result, add a few drops of tea tree or lemon essential oil to the cleaning water. Try it first in an inconspicuous area, because oils may affect the sheen of certain plastics.

Tenants should photograph any stains that were already present. Start with gentle cleaning. If discolouration remains, it may be plastic oxidation rather than dirt.
