A washing-up sponge may have long since been retired from the kitchen cupboard, yet in an outdoor bed it can unexpectedly become a quiet lifesaver for thirsty plants.
The gardening season is beginning: spells of early sunshine alternate with cool nights, rain is scarce, and many amateur gardeners are dealing with dried-out pots and beds.
