Japan’s “Washing Machine for People”: The Future of Showering

Many people are now turning on the tap less often – because they are short of time, for environmental reasons, and because emerging technology is promising entirely different approaches to personal care. In Japan, a “washing machine for people” is currently attracting attention: it takes care of the entire washing process inside a sealed capsule.

Why people are showering less

Surveys in Europe and the United States have revealed a clear shift over recent years: having a daily shower is no longer seen as essential. Dermatologists caution against washing too frequently, energy bills are rising, and saving water has become a mainstream concern.

Japan’s “washing machine for people”

The Japanese company Science Co. is developing a system called “Mirai Ningen Sentakuki”, loosely translated as “washing machine for the person of the future”. It is an enclosed capsule in which the user sits, rather like an oversized massage chair or a compact sauna.

Once the user is inside, the washing cycle begins automatically. The capsule fills with water and activates a system containing millions of tiny microbubbles, intended to cleanse the body without the need to lather up or scrub.

The developers promise a complete washing and drying cycle in around 15 minutes – requiring no effort from the user and tailored to their individual physical condition.

How microbubble technology works

Microbubbles are already used in certain wellness treatments. They are small enough to enter skin pores and loosen particles of dirt. This means far less physical friction is needed, with less rubbing and brushing.

Inside the capsule, this principle is taken further:

  • ultra-fine bubbles are intended to cleanse the skin gently
  • the water temperature is adjusted automatically
  • the pressure and direction of the water flow can vary

The aim is thorough cleansing without continually exposing the skin and mucous membranes to harsh cleaning products.

The bathroom becomes a health monitoring station

The machine is designed to do more than wash: it also collects data at the same time. Numerous sensors inside the capsule record physical readings, including heart rate. In the longer term, measurements could also cover pulse variability, skin circulation and signs of stress.

Built-in AI analyses this information in real time and adapts the washing cycle. Someone who is stressed receives warmer water, gentler flows, calmer lighting and perhaps quieter sounds. Someone who appears tired is given a slightly more invigorating setting.

What fitness bands and smartwatches do today could happen incidentally while washing tomorrow – turning the shower into a health hub.

Personalised wellness instead of a standard shower head

According to the developers, the machine can control the following settings, among others:

An old concept with new technology: roots in the 1970s

The idea is not entirely new. A kind of automated bathing device was presented as a vision of the future at the Osaka Expo in the 1970s. At the time, however, the technology fell far short of what is possible today: powerful sensors, computing capacity and AI were lacking.

Now the concept is returning with very different possibilities. Computing power has become tiny, sensors are inexpensive, and the healthcare sector is investing heavily in digital data. As a result, an old futuristic dream could suddenly become attainable.

Will the capsule replace the daily shower?

Whether such cabins will eventually be installed in ordinary homes remains uncertain. At present, the system is better suited to hotels, wellness retreats, care homes or hospitals. In particular, people with limited mobility could benefit from an automated washing process that requires little physical effort.

Likely initial uses include:

  • premium hotel suites offering guests a “Future Bathroom”
  • first-class airport lounges where travellers can freshen up completely in 15 minutes
  • rehabilitation centres and care facilities where patients no longer need to be laboriously lifted into baths

At home, systems like these could at least replace certain showers, such as when a quick clean after exercise or a relaxing evening ritual is all that is required.

How hygienic is it really?

The developers’ ambition is considerable: complete cleanliness in a short time. Whether this works in practice depends on several factors, including capsule maintenance, filter quality and the handling of residual moisture within the system. Hygiene is particularly important when it is used by multiple people.

Dermatologists also point out that being “clean” does not mean stripping away every natural layer of oil from the skin. Microbubble technology could even offer an advantage here because it requires fewer aggressive surfactants. However, only independent testing will show how effectively it removes sweat, bacteria and odours in everyday use.

Less showering, smarter care: what does this mean for us?

If the trend towards less frequent showers continues, the search for alternatives will become more important. Alongside dry shampoos, washcloths and quick washes at the sink, high-tech solutions are now emerging that combine several functions: cleansing, relaxation and health monitoring.

Those who use a conventional shower less often can still manage well with a considered personal-care routine:

  • Clean heavily affected areas of the body specifically on “shower-free” days.
  • Choose gentle care products that do not damage the skin barrier.
  • Select sportswear and everyday clothing carefully to regulate sweat more effectively.
  • Have occasional wellness treatments, whether in a sauna, at a spa or perhaps one day in a capsule like this.

Risks, limitations and unanswered questions

As futuristic as it all sounds, several issues remain unresolved. Processing sensitive health data in the bathroom places high demands on data protection and IT security. Who stores this information, who can access it, and can it be linked to other profiles, such as health-insurance apps?

There are practical considerations too: how noisy is such a machine? How much electricity does it use? Can it be fitted in ordinary homes without completely rebuilding the bathroom? Ultimately, these questions will help determine whether the vision becomes a mass-market product or remains a novelty for high-tech hotels.

The move away from conventional daily showers, however, is likely to remain. Between rising costs, environmental protection and new technological options, a different understanding of personal care is slowly taking shape: less frequent, more mindful and increasingly personalised – and perhaps one day genuinely carried out in a personal “washing machine for people”.
