Want to cut your electricity bill substantially by using your washing machine more wisely? Here is the best time to start a wash and make worthwhile savings.

At a time when using less energy is no longer simply a choice but a necessity, every household should reconsider its electricity-use habits. Among domestic appliances, the washing machine accounts for a meaningful share, representing around 6% of the electricity used by an average household (according to EDF). Understanding how to use it more efficiently is therefore vital for reducing both your bill and your environmental footprint.

When should you avoid running your washing machine?

The first step towards more responsible consumption is knowing when peak periods occur. Electricity demand is at its highest between 6 pm and 10 pm, which leads to higher energy costs.

For many electricity suppliers, this time slot also corresponds to the peak-rate tariff. By avoiding use of your washing machine during these hours, you can save money while helping to reduce pressure on the electricity grid.

The best times to run a washing machine

The alternative is to use off-peak hours, usually from 10 pm to 6 am, depending on your electricity contract. Electricity demand is lower during this period, so reduced rates may apply. Setting your washing machine to run then lets you benefit from a lower price per kWh and, in turn, lower your bill. If you have an EDF Tempo tariff, using the washing machine during off-peak hours is even more worthwhile, except on red days.

It also helps to balance demand across the electricity network more effectively, which is a worthwhile environmental measure.

Choose eco mode

To increase your savings, most modern washing machines have an eco mode. This setting washes at temperatures below 40°C, substantially cutting the amount of hot water used and therefore the energy required. When your clothes are not especially dirty, it is the best option for washing effectively while saving money. It is also gentler on fabrics.

You should also maintain your washing machine regularly. Clean filters and seals ensure it operates at maximum efficiency, preventing unnecessary water and electricity consumption.
