How to Remove Baked-On Grease from Stove Tiles

Grease baked onto stove tiles becomes increasingly difficult to lift as fresh layers of oil, dust and heat build up. With this kind of long-standing grime, rubbing with alcohol or making a quick pass with washing-up liquid can take considerable effort. A more effective approach generally starts by softening the coating with heat or steam, then removing it using a suitable product and a non-abrasive cloth or sponge.

Why is old grease so hard to remove?

Fresh oil splashes are usually easy to wipe away because they remain fairly fluid. However, repeated heating and cooling cycles behind the cooker spread the residue into a sticky film, which traps other particles and bonds more firmly to the tiled surface.

Washing-up liquid is not ineffective in this process. Its surfactants help release and emulsify grease so that water can carry it away. The issue is expecting a quick application of cold washing-up liquid to immediately dissolve a layer that has accumulated over weeks or months. Hot or warm water, along with contact time, helps loosen greasy deposits before scrubbing.

Is steam the best first step for baked-on grease?

On heat-resistant tiles, steam can be especially helpful because it delivers heat and moisture straight to the hardened layer, making mechanical removal easier. Steam cleaners can be used to loosen grease from kitchen surfaces and grout, although the jet must be handled carefully near silicone sealant, sockets, cupboards and other sensitive materials.

Bicarbonate of soda or an enzymatic degreaser: which should you choose?

A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water can be useful for stuck-on spots that need mild abrasive action. Apply it and rub gently, particularly on grout and tile finishes that may scratch. Cleaning guidance also recommends bicarbonate of soda paste for stubborn dirt, followed by rinsing with water.

Enzymatic degreasers work differently: some enzymes help break down grease and organic residue over time. In this case, additional heat does not necessarily mean a better result, as the product needs to remain in place for the time and at the temperature stated on its label. It is best to select a formula clearly suitable for tiles and grout rather than adapting products made for floors or drains.

  • Steam: helps soften old deposits quickly;
  • Bicarbonate of soda paste: provides mild abrasive action on stubborn areas;
  • Degreaser: helps disperse or break down grease according to its formula;
  • Enzymatic product: mainly requires sufficient contact time;
  • A microfibre cloth or soft sponge: removes material that has already been loosened.

Why is alcohol not the best option near the cooker?

Alcohol can dissolve certain residues and is widely used for other cleaning tasks, but it is not the most practical choice for a thick crust of grease. Ethanol and isopropyl alcohol are also flammable liquids, so they must not be used near flames, lit burners or surfaces that are still hot. The cooker should be switched off and completely cool before any cleaning begins.

Does temperature matter more than the product?

Heat can make a major difference because it softens greasy deposits and reduces the force needed to release them. This is why hot water or steam often makes cleaning an old layer far easier than starting straight away with a cold cloth. Even so, there is no rule that temperature is always more important: heat, product chemistry, contact time and friction work together.

In practice, for the tiles behind the cooker, begin by softening the grime with steam or warm water where the surface is compatible, remove the excess, and only then treat persistent spots with bicarbonate of soda paste or a degreaser designed for that surface. Wiping up splashes regularly prevents new layers from being repeatedly heated during cooking and turning into the sticky film that is much more laborious to remove.
