Why You Should Unplug Your TV During Thunderstorms

When the sky darkens and thunder begins to rumble, most people think about windows, balconies and leaky roofs rather than electrical circuits.

However, every summer storm can bring a less obvious risk into the home: severe voltage surges that threaten everyday electronics, even if lightning does not hit the property itself.

The hidden threat storms bring into your living room

Thunderstorms bring more than dramatic claps of thunder. They can force powerful electrical surges through mains wiring, telephone lines and television cables. These surges may then enter the home and reach equipment never built to withstand such an impact.

During major electrical storms, engineers identify three principal effects: sudden voltage peaks, brief supply dips, and fast, recurring micro-outages. All of them place strain on the sensitive parts inside today’s electronic devices.

People frequently focus on the wrong appliances. Microwaves, lamps and compact kitchen devices can seem particularly at risk because they are so visible. But in most homes, the equipment facing the greatest exposure sits quietly in the lounge.

The appliance you should unplug first

Technicians who handle storm-related faults every week say that the biggest risk is not usually the microwave or the lighting. It is the television.

Modern televisions – including LED, QLED, OLED and other flat-screen models – are effectively slim cases full of highly sensitive electronics. Their power units and control boards depend on a stable, consistent supply voltage. A sudden surge drives abnormal voltage through tiny parts with little ability to absorb it.

If lightning strikes close to a neighbourhood, the electricity network may be hit by impulses measuring thousands of volts. The current does not have to strike the house directly. A pulse moving through the network can be enough to scorch the main board, ruin capacitors or immediately destroy the internal power supply.

Why switching off is not enough: technicians’ advice

Many people assume they are protected once they press the remote-control power button. In practice, this is not the case. A television in standby remains connected to the mains and to other equipment through its cables.

Electricians and electronics repair technicians give the same advice repeatedly: once a strong thunderstorm approaches, only complete disconnection offers dependable protection.

  • Remove the TV plug from the wall socket.
  • Disconnect HDMI leads attached to consoles or set-top boxes.
  • Unplug the aerial or cable television connection.
  • Disconnect the modem and router from mains power as well as telephone, fibre or cable lines.

HDMI leads, aerial cables and broadband wiring can each provide a route for excess voltage. Even with the television switched off, a surge can pass through an attached games console or decoder and enter the TV’s internal boards directly.

Can voltage stabilisers or UPS units protect your devices?

Many homes use voltage stabilisers or basic surge-protection strips as a form of reassurance. They can assist with small day-to-day variations, but a powerful thunderstorm can exceed their design capability.

Ordinary stabilisers contain components intended for moderate voltage changes. Surges caused by lightning can surpass those limits by a huge amount. In that situation, the stabiliser may fail before the connected appliance does, or it may allow part of the surge to pass through.

Uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) – battery-backed units commonly used with PCs – provide stronger protection, particularly better-quality models fitted with suitable surge circuitry. Certified surge protectors containing metal-oxide varistors provide an additional layer of defence by limiting sudden peaks and sacrificing themselves in the process.

These devices remain useful for everyday reliability, particularly in areas with an unstable electricity supply. They can guard against micro-outages, electrical noise and normal voltage variation that gradually reduces the lifespan of electronic equipment over the years.

But when nearby lightning strikes are involved, specialists generally agree that no commercially available stabiliser can promise complete protection. Unplugging equipment remains the only approach that genuinely cuts every electrical route.

The other devices storms can quietly destroy

Televisions receive the most attention because they are costly and conspicuous. Yet storm damage often first affects the less impressive equipment positioned beside them.

Modems, routers and your internet connection

Broadband routers sit where several types of connection meet: mains sockets, telephone wiring, fibre or coaxial cables, and often Ethernet cables running to other rooms. Any of those connections can carry a surge.

Following a serious storm, telecommunications providers routinely hear from customers whose lights and fridges still work but whose internet connection has failed. The broadband unit may no longer power up, or its ports may remain inactive. The surge could have entered through the mains supply or via the network line from the street cabinet.

For households dependent on video calls, remote working and smart-home systems, a failed router disrupts far more than an evening of streaming.

Consoles, audio equipment and concealed weak spots

Games consoles and home-cinema amplifiers use small, densely packed circuit boards. Their manufacturers engineer them for performance rather than repeated exposure to the shock of severe electrical surges.

A sharp voltage peak may destroy the internal power module or harm storage and processing chips. In many instances, the equipment will still switch on once or twice before failing several days later, when weakened components finally stop working.

Set-top boxes and soundbars create another less obvious vulnerability. They are positioned between multiple devices and linked through HDMI and optical leads. A surge entering at one end can leave through the other, spreading the damage across the entire system.

Creating a practical storm routine at home

Homes in areas prone to thunderstorms often establish habits that greatly reduce their risk with little effort. A straightforward checklist is useful once thunder starts approaching.

  • Switch off and unplug the main television, along with any connected consoles or boxes.
  • Remove the aerial or satellite lead from the rear of the television.
  • Turn off and unplug the modem and router, including their telephone or fibre connections.
  • Unplug desktop computers and external hard drives holding irreplaceable data.
  • Use quality surge protectors or a UPS with sensitive equipment during normal day-to-day operation.

For many households, the simplest arrangement is to centralise the connections: plug the television, consoles and boxes into one extension lead with an obvious switch, and keep aerial or cable connectors accessible enough to remove quickly.

Homes are increasingly filled with connected equipment, from smart speakers and networked security cameras to streaming sticks and connected thermostats. Every extra device adds small circuit boards and power adapters that are vulnerable to voltage variations.

Climate data across several regions, including parts of the US and Europe, indicates longer warm seasons and more frequent intense storms. Together, these trends increase the number of hours each year in which powerful surges can affect local electricity networks.

Insurance policies may sometimes cover lightning damage, but claims commonly demand evidence, photographs, reports and time. Even where compensation is paid, it rarely makes up for lost data or the inconvenience of replacing equipment at short notice.

Knowing how storms can travel through cables enables households to make fast, informed decisions. Disconnecting a handful of plugs and leads before a storm reaches its peak causes a brief loss of convenience, but it can safeguard electronics worth hundreds or thousands of pounds that many families rely on every day.
