Store strawberries correctly: this simple trick keeps them fresh for longer

With one simple trick, strawberries stay noticeably fresh for longer.

No sooner have you bought them than the first berries are already soft, taste watery or develop mould spots. Many people instinctively reach for the fridge or the fruit bowl – and that is precisely the mistake. Storing strawberries properly can keep them crisp, flavoursome and visually appealing for several days.

Why strawberries spoil so quickly

Strawberries are among the most delicate fruits on supermarket shelves. They are picked fully ripe, do not continue ripening afterwards, and are highly sensitive to pressure and moisture. Even the slightest knock causes invisible damage to the flesh, creating an ideal entry point for bacteria and mould.

Pressure, moisture and temperature

Their lightly textured surface, with numerous tiny indentations, adds to the problem. Moisture collects in these areas, providing conditions in which micro-organisms thrive. Warmth speeds up this process, while excessive chilling can damage both their flavour and texture.

“Strawberries are sensitive to pressure, prone to moisture and do not ripen further – incorrect storage immediately takes its toll on the fruit.”

Choose the right strawberries when shopping

Proper storage starts at the shop shelf rather than at home. Being selective at this stage means far fewer problems later on.
