How to Stop a Cutting Board Slipping with a Damp Cloth

A cutting board that moves across the worktop can make routine jobs, such as chopping vegetables or meat, less safe. A straightforward household solution is to place a clean, slightly damp cloth beneath the cutting board, creating a grippier layer between the two surfaces.

Why does a cutting board slip?

This issue is generally more noticeable with a lightweight board placed on a smooth worktop. As you cut, the force applied with the knife can cause the board to shift sideways.

The moisture in a damp cloth can improve the contact between the fabric and the surface, while the cloth itself provides a higher-friction layer. The intention is not to wet the worktop, but to form a base that limits movement of the board.

How to place a cloth under the cutting board

Take a clean cloth, dampen it slightly, then wring it out thoroughly to remove excess water. Lay it flat across the worktop and position the cutting board centrally on top.
