Bathroom paint: avoiding blisters and peeling walls

Many DIY enthusiasts will recognise the situation: you are in a DIY shop, spot a special offer, pick up a ‘universal’ wall paint and feel like a professional once the painting is done. Only months later does it become clear whether that choice was actually a wise one. In a bathroom especially, using the wrong paint often leads to unsightly blisters, cracks and peeling patches.

Everything looked perfect at first

Immediately after painting, the result can look impressive. The walls appear even, the colour is right, and the light feels more welcoming. Anyone stepping into their ‘new’ bathroom after finishing the job is likely to feel proud. During the first few weeks, the paint seems to cope perfectly; even with daily showers, nothing appears to change.

That is precisely what makes it deceptive: many standard interior paints are intended for dry rooms, such as living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. They can withstand brief exposure to moisture, but not the constant, dense cloud of water vapour produced by hot showers. What initially seems like a clever way to save money turns out to be a ticking time bomb.

The problems emerge after 6 to 18 months

Most damage does not become apparent after two weeks; it develops gradually. On average, it takes between six months and a year and a half before the problem becomes clearly visible. Bumps suddenly appear, the surface looks swollen, and in some places the coating starts to burst open.

  • the ceiling directly above the shower or bath
  • the wall that is hit directly by steam
  • corners and edges, where air circulates less effectively

In these areas, humidity often rises well above 80 per cent after showering. Ordinary wall paints cannot cope with this kind of climate. Moisture works its way behind the paint layer, adhesion to the substrate fails, and blisters form before flakes eventually fall to the floor.

Every hot shower produces a considerable amount of water vapour. It spreads around the room, condenses on cooler surfaces and, if the paint has not been designed for it, gradually makes its way behind the coating.

A paint layer essentially acts like a film. When moisture gets behind it, that film swells from within. At first, this may look like small raised areas; later, the paint detaches in large sheets. This is not a matter of a ‘bad painter’, but of choosing the wrong product for the environment.

Why standards and performance ratings genuinely matter in bathrooms

Clear standards exist for damp rooms. Anyone choosing the right tin in a DIY shop should check the technical information. Suitable options for bathrooms include:

  • solvent-based paints, often described as ‘glycol or synthetic resin paints’, for damp rooms
  • high-quality acrylic paints explicitly labelled ‘for bathroom / kitchen / damp rooms’
  • products with tested moisture resistance in accordance with common European standards

These paints contain durable binders and additives that prevent water vapour from travelling behind the surface. Ignoring these details means saving money in the wrong place – and the cost becomes apparent when everything has to be redone.

Recovery plan: how to paint a bathroom for lasting protection

Step 1: Remove existing damage thoroughly

Before applying a new coat, the substrate must be sound. Otherwise, the damage is simply being covered up.

  • Scrape away all loose paint until a stable surface is exposed.
  • Cut open blisters, allow the substrate to dry, and remove any crumbly material.
  • Depending on the material, fill, sand and thoroughly vacuum away dust.
  • Let damp patches dry completely; use a dehumidifier if necessary.

Only a firm, clean and dry base can support a new, durable paint finish.

Step 2: Apply a moisture-resistant primer

A specialist primer is useful before the actual painting begins. These products penetrate the substrate and seal pores, making it more difficult for moisture to get in. At the same time, the primer helps the final coat adhere evenly.

This intermediate step is particularly worthwhile on plasterboard, old filled areas or porous plaster. Skipping it risks preventing even an expensive damp-room paint from performing to its full potential.

Step 3: Proper ventilation is not a ‘nice-to-have’

Even the best paint will lose the battle if humidity remains too high for long periods. Controlled ventilation therefore plays an important role in modern bathrooms. An extractor fan or central ventilation system should remove sufficient air to ensure that moisture levels fall promptly after showering.

Two opaque coats are recommended, each rolled in a slightly different direction to prevent streaks. Allow at least one full day between coats. During this period, avoid taking hot showers and let the walls cure undisturbed.

A sealed paint layer is only one part of the system. To protect a renovation over the long term, the cause must be addressed: too much water vapour in the room. In practical terms, damp air should be removed quickly after every shower. Letting the bathroom dry out consistently after use not only reduces paint damage, but also lowers the risk of mould behind furniture or in joints.

The right combination makes the difference

Anyone who takes these three points seriously has a good chance of maintaining visually stable walls for several years:

  • a carefully prepared, dry substrate
  • primer and specialist damp-room paint rather than a universal product
  • controlled ventilation and sensible everyday use

In practice, this combination often lasts three to five years before minor touch-ups become necessary. Compared with a cheap paint finish that develops its first flaws after only a few months, that is a much less stressful period.

Anyone unsure whether their own bathroom is at risk can use a simple hygrometer. This small device measures humidity. If the reading regularly remains well above 70 per cent for a long time after showering, it is worth checking the ventilation, the paint finish and possibly hidden damp areas behind cupboards or curtains.

This prevents “if only I had chosen the right paint” from becoming a personal bathroom disaster, and instead makes it an improvement project that pays off in the long term – both visually and financially.
