During summer, getting into a car that has been sitting in the sun for hours and feeling as though you have stepped into an oven is both a familiar and unpleasant experience.

The temperature inside the cabin can easily be 10 °C to 20 °C higher than it is outdoors, making it tempting to immediately switch on the air conditioning.

Before doing that, however, try this simple yet remarkably effective method to cool the car interior within seconds. We discovered this trick in Japan, and it involves two steps:

1. Fully lower the passenger-side window.
2. Quickly open and close the driver's door five times, without slamming it.

Opening and closing the door creates a pumping effect, pushing the hot air out through the open window and replacing it with cooler air from outside. The effect is immediate: the cabin temperature can drop by up to 8 °C in just a few seconds.

Why this Japanese car cooling trick works

Tests carried out in Japan confirm that this technique is effective. It will not turn the interior from an oven into a refrigerator, but exchanging the stuffy air inside for cooler, more breathable outdoor air makes the start of the journey far more comfortable. Only then, if your car has it, should you turn on the air conditioning.
