More and more amateur gardeners are looking for an option that works without turning the garden into a chemical wasteland. Surprisingly often, the answer is found not on a DIY shop shelf but in the kitchen cupboard: an ordinary baking and cleaning powder can greatly reduce moss on paths and lawns, provided it is used precisely, sparingly and with some understanding of how it works.

Why moss thrives on lawns and paths

Moss does not mean you are a “bad gardener”; rather, it is a fairly honest sign that conditions are ideal for this plant and less favourable for the lawn.

On lawns, moss particularly benefits from the following conditions:

  • acidic soil with a pH below around 6
  • compacted ground that lets very little air through
  • persistently damp areas, often after rain or in shade
  • weakened grass, for example because of nutrient shortages or incorrect mowing

Where gaps develop in the grass, moss moves in. It captures light and moisture, causing the lawn to retreat even further – a cycle that can turn many gardens into a green-grey matted surface within just a few winters.

A similar process takes place on paths, paving slabs and gravel areas. Moss establishes itself in joints, holds moisture, makes the surface progressively more slippery and turns a tidy driveway into a hazardous “carpeted runway”. Since many synthetic pesticides were banned from private gardens, the old powerful moss killers have disappeared, prompting the search for straightforward alternatives.

Moss is not the problem but the symptom: moisture, compaction and acidic soil provide its perfect stage.

Bicarbonate of soda: a kitchen staple with surprising effects in the garden

The powder in question is familiar to most people from baking recipes and cleaning tips: bicarbonate of soda, chemically known as sodium bicarbonate. It helps dough rise, neutralises odours and assists with cleaning pans – and it can visibly damage moss.

Its effect is based on two factors:

  • Bicarbonate of soda locally raises the pH at the moss surface.
  • Moss cells dry out, causing the plant to turn brown and die.

On lawns and hard surfaces, the change is often noticeable within a few days: vivid green becomes dull yellow or brown, after which it can be removed mechanically. Bicarbonate of soda is not a replacement for essential maintenance, but it works like a precise “switch” for dealing with individual moss patches.

How to use bicarbonate of soda correctly on a lawn

Getting the dosage right is crucial. Too much can harm not only the moss but also the grass. Starting cautiously substantially reduces the risk.

Step-by-step lawn guide

  1. Choose a suitable day: Pick dry weather without intense sunshine, ideally with no rain forecast for 24–48 hours.
  2. Prepare the mixture: Dissolve around 2–3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda in 1 litre of water, stirring thoroughly until no lumps remain.
  3. Spray accurately: Treat only the moss patches rather than the entire lawn. A pressure sprayer helps ensure economical application.
  4. Wait for the reaction: After 2–3 days, the moss should turn yellow to brown and appear dry.
  5. Rake out the moss: Remove loosened remains using a leaf rake or scarifier.
  6. Overseed: Lightly roughen bare patches, scatter some lawn seed, press it down and moisten it.

If you are working on highly acidic soil, test a small area before the first larger application. If the grass discolours severely or dies, either the concentration was too high or the site is exceptionally sensitive.

Spray precisely rather than watering a large area: this ensures the bicarbonate of soda reaches the moss, not the whole lawn.

Removing moss from driveways and patios with bicarbonate of soda

Bicarbonate of soda works somewhat differently on paved surfaces, slab paths and gravel because there is no sensitive lawn growing alongside them. However, there is another risk: sterile joints where even desirable plants may later struggle to establish themselves.

Dry application for joints and cracks

For ordinary moss clusters, applying the powder dry is often enough:

  • Sweep the surface thoroughly so that the powder can reach the moss patches directly.
  • Scatter around 20 grams of bicarbonate of soda thinly per linear metre of joint, roughly a small handful.
  • Work it into the joints using a stiff brush.
  • Let the weather do the rest: dew and light showers will gradually dissolve the powder.
  • Once the moss has turned brown, remove it with a brush or paving-joint scraper.

A solution for severely slippery surfaces

For paths that are dangerously slippery, a liquid treatment can be more appropriate:

  • dissolve 2–3 tablespoons of bicarbonate of soda per litre of water in a watering can or sprayer tank
  • spread it evenly across the affected areas
  • allow it to work for 1–2 days
  • then rinse lightly with clean water so residues do not run into flower beds

If there is a pond, vegetable patch or sensitive perennials nearby, use solid edging or small barriers to prevent the solution running into these areas.

How often is acceptable – and when is it too much?

Bicarbonate of soda is considered comparatively harmless, but it remains an active substance that affects soil. Experts advise treating the same area no more than once or twice a year. Using it substantially more often can lead to the following effects:

  • Joints in paved areas become almost sterile, leaving even small flowering plants with no chance to grow.
  • Grass along the edges of treated areas may yellow.
  • In extreme cases, soil chemistry changes so greatly that soil life suffers.

As little as possible, as precisely as necessary – that is the best approach to bicarbonate of soda in the garden.

Moss will return without maintenance

Spraying, scraping and scattering powder alone primarily addresses the symptoms. To limit moss in the long term, the lawn needs conditions that are better than those available to its green competitor.

Strengthening the lawn: the key measures

  • Scarify regularly: In spring and autumn, comb out the matted layer of grass debris and moss.
  • Loosen the soil: Break up compacted areas using an aerator roller or garden fork.
  • Improve drainage: Avoid waterlogging, for example with sand or drainage channels in problem areas.
  • Fertilise properly: A balanced lawn fertiliser strengthens the grass and helps it close gaps.
  • Mow appropriately: Do not cut too short or mow too infrequently; a cutting height of 4–5 centimetres is usually ideal.

Anyone who tackles these points will need the kitchen powder only occasionally. The lawn can then regain control itself, allowing moss to appear only in isolated spots.

What else you should know about bicarbonate of soda in the garden

Bicarbonate of soda affects plants differently from people. In baking, it breaks down into harmless components; on moss patches, it changes the microclimate at the surface. A realistic view of both its advantages and limitations helps it work effectively in everyday use.
