Why Does a Washing Machine Move During the Spin Cycle?

Seeing a washing machine move during the spin cycle can be alarming, but this movement does not always mean the appliance is faulty. In many situations, excessive vibration is linked to levelling, how the laundry is distributed, the floor, or the incorrect handling of transit bolts.

Why does the washing machine start moving?

During the spin cycle, the drum rotates at high speed. If laundry is gathered on one side, the load may become unbalanced, increasing vibration.

When these forces exceed the appliance’s ability to remain stable, the washing machine may rock and even shift across the floor. This is particularly likely if a heavy item absorbs a large amount of water and remains concentrated in one area of the drum.

Does levelling affect stability?

Yes. The washing machine must rest securely on its feet. If one foot has not been adjusted properly, or if the floor is uneven, the appliance can be more prone to rocking during spinning.

A straightforward check is to press gently on the machine’s corners and see whether it feels stable. If it rocks, the feet may need adjusting in line with the manufacturer’s instructions.

Can the floor make a difference?

The type and condition of the floor also affect stability. An uneven surface, one with a pronounced slope, or a floor unsuitable for the equipment’s weight can make movement more likely.

It is also important to ensure the feet rest directly on the floor and that there are no objects or unstable materials underneath the washing machine. The manual for the model should specify the recommended installation conditions.

What about transit bolts?

Some washing machines, especially front-loading models, have transit bolts or transport devices that keep the drum assembly fixed while the appliance is transported from the factory to the home.

These devices must be removed before use, following the manufacturer’s specific guidance. If they remain fitted, they can cause excessive vibration and may even damage the appliance.

What should you do if the washing machine keeps moving?

First, stop the cycle and check that the laundry is spread reasonably evenly. Then inspect the levelling, the feet and the floor conditions.

If the washing machine still moves despite a balanced load and correct installation, consult the manual or arrange a technical assessment. It is not advisable to continue using an appliance that moves excessively, as vibration can damage components and increase the risk of accidents.

Before deciding that the washing machine is broken, it is worth checking the basic installation and usage factors. Often, the issue lies with load balance or the appliance’s support rather than an internal fault.
