Chilly mornings, warm afternoons and trays of impatient seedlings make spring the season when gardeners are tempted to take a step that can be harsh on plants.
Throughout the UK and US, gardeners are preparing beds and containers for tomatoes, salads and summer flowers. But the same quiet problem occurs every year: seedlings that appeared flawless in their pots suddenly stop growing, wilt or die after being planted out. It is seldom down to chance.
